Grandmother
Scholastic Australia 1978

A small girl visits her grandmother whose garden is so
overgrown it is almost a jungle. Statues hide amongst
the trees and the seasons seem to merge as in memory.
‘We had crusts of  bread to feed the birds
and broke them into  small pieces to leave on the
ground.
Grandmother said that sometimes,
When she is very quiet and alone
They will eat from her hand’.

Grandmother’s cottage is full of treasures .  But most
treasured, is the affection between the child and her
grandmother.
